A Guide to Hair Care During and After Pregnancy from Nevaeh Salon in Roseville

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time but it also has its emotional and physical challenges.

With your hormone levels fluctuating to accommodate the growing life inside you, pregnant women can experience all sorts of pregnancy hair-related problems. So, hot -on-the-heels of Kate Middleton’s pregnancies, we have the Nevaeh guide to looking after your hair when pregnant or a new mom.

Hair concerns during pregnancy

Here at Nevaeh Hair Salon in Roseville we have put together this guide to help you with your hair concerns during and after pregnancy. Your estrogen levels change dramatically during pregnancy and each woman is affected differently.  Estrogen slows down the normal hair shedding phase so if you are experiencing high levels of estrogen you may experience thick shiny hair in pregnancy.

Some pregnant women may experience oily or greasy hair, others may have dry, brittle maternity hair and some find their hair changes from week to week.  Sometimes straight haired pregnant women experience curly or frizzy hair, while curly hair becomes straighter during pregnancy.  Whatever happens to your hair, do not panic as the hair designers at Nevaeh Hair Salon have seen it all and can help you.

There is no reason why you shouldn’t have fabulous pregnancy hair just like Halle Berry, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian.

Hair loss after childbirth

As your estrogen levels return to normal you have experience some hair loss after childbirth.  If you are concerned about your thinning hair, please consult with your health care provider who may provide you with medical or dietary advice.

We understand that this can be a worrying time so please come and talk to our expert stylists at Nevaeh Salon for hair care advice after pregnancy.   You can also try to reduce stress on your hair during pregnancy and after birth with these tips:

  • Avoid making your ponytails, buns, braids, pigtails, cornrows and hair weaves too tight.  This will add stress to the hair.
  • Be gentle when combing wet hair.  Use a detangling brush that is made for use on wet hair.
  • Turn your hair dryers and heated styling tools to the coolest setting.
  • Use deep conditioner once a week to boost moisture and consider using a heat protectant spray before using a curling iron or flat iron.

Pregnancy and chemical hair treatments

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), hair chemicals such as hair colors, perms, hair straightening and smoothing treatments) are probably safe chemicals to use during pregnancy because only a small amount is absorbed through the skin.

However, most health care professionals will advise you to avoid contact with hair chemicals until your second trimester.  Absorption of chemicals through the skin is minimal but there are still concerns that breathing fumes could be harmful to the developing baby.

If you are considering a new hair color please tell your stylist at Nevaeh Hair Salon that you are pregnant.  Ask for highlights or lowlights because these generate fewer chemical fumes and come into very little contact with your scalp.
